A few months ago, one of my good IG friends @debby_thechocoholic posted on her stories that she was bored during the lockdown. I knew she has been wanting to start her yoga YouTube channel for a while so I asked why she wasn’t working on that. That’s when she started talking to me about her insecurities to get in front of that camera (which a lot of people struggle with). I decided to give her that little extra push and a few weeks later, SHE DID IT! She started her own YouTube channel ‘Zen With Debby‘ and I couldn’t be more proud. As I know a lot of people struggle with talking on camera, I asked her if she would like to share her story with you so you can do it too!
Hi everyone! My name is Debby and I’m a Belgian yoga Instructor and a huge chocolate addict. Jana asked me to write a guestblog on how I conquered my fear of talking on camera. So here I go!
But first I’d like to take a moment to thank Jana for all her support and for not stopping to believe in me. She is one of the reasons why I didn’t give up. Thank you for everything!
Overcoming my fear of talking on camera
I am someone who is very insecure and shy at first, and who needs some time to adjust. Talking on camera was one of those things that I didn’t dare, or like, doing, because I wondered “Why would anyone care or even listen to what I say?” I gave it a few attempts, but didn’t feel confident at all. I felt like giving up when Jana said to me “The more you try, the easier it will get.”. I took these wise words with me and decided to stop worrying about what other people think.
I was planning on starting with a Yoga Channel on YouTube. At first I tried to talk when shooting the video itself, but felt stuck. It was so hard to get any further than my intro speech. I kept searching for words and even became frustrated with me making mistakes. I almost gave up, but I didn’t!
After hearing Jana’s wise words (which I mentioned earlier in this post), I decided to stop worrying over talking on camera. I learned about VoiceOver* and wanted to give it a try. It seemed more doable for creating a nice yoga video.
* A voiceover means that you can add sound to your video after filming.
This feature has been a huge life changer! I no longer have to search for my words or think about what I am going to say next. I don’t have to stress over making mistakes with the guidance of the yoga practice. Now I am just enjoying the creation of my video and only have to worry about creating the VoiceOver and making sure it fits with the movements of yoga poses.
My YouTube Channel, Zen With Debby, launched on April 30th and I don’t regret it all! It has been, and still is, a wonderful journey. And I overcame the fear of putting myself out there in public.
One day I’d like to have a proper intro speech, spoken by myself on camera. Of course this is a future goal, so I will have lots of time to become more confident.
Talking on Camera
Talking on camera still feels kinda awkward, but I must admit to feel more comfortable than a few weeks ago. Yes, it can be very frustrating to redo a video, especially as I am not easily satisfied with my own work. But practice makes perfect, right?
I didn’t have the confidence to talk to my followers at all, because some days I just don’t want to be seen on camera. But I think it is nice to see a real person behind a wall of pictures. And as an influencer it is important to give your followers what they want to see. In this case: a real talking person instead of only product photos or regular posts.
At first I had no idea what to talk about, so Jana gave me some guidance. Even wishing your followers a good day can be enough. So when I feel “camera worthy”, I’ll try to upload a personal video. For me this is a work in progress. I have so much to learn and to improve, but I am sure about getting out of my comfort zone. If I can talk in front of my group classes, then why can’t I talk in front of a camera?
You are NOT alone!
I am lucky to have someone like Jana in my life. She kept me motivated, even when I was down and negative. She was my go-to person for guidance, as she’s used to speaking on camera or in podcasts. I am glad that I put my stubbornness aside and followed her tips and tricks.
So if you ever feel stuck or insecure, make sure to talk about your feelings. There is always someone who wants to listen and help. Even if this person is someone you know through internet or social media. Technology makes it possible to connect with people worldwide, so I am sure there will always be at least one person who is willing to help you out or give some guidance.
What this journey taught me:
- Don’t stress over easy things like talking on camera. Just be yourself!
- Never give up. Even when it feels hard or impossible.
- Follow your heart. If you want something, do it! Give it a couple of tries and see how you feel afterwards. The world is for those who try and do!
- Find help if you feel stuck.
- Be patient with yourself and the journey of growing confidence.
- Baby steps can help! Start with a simple “Happy weekend” or “Hello” and try creating longer videos of you talking.
I hope this blogpost gives you some inspiration or motivation to talk on camera. Just give it a try. And if you don’t like it, start by sharing this video with a close friend or family members. If they like it, try to create a Story video (f.e. Instagram Story) and share it with close friends only (you can choose who you add to your close friends on IG). Baby steps until you feel more confident to share your videos with the world 😊
